Landing a job in NYC with international BB experience

Hi all,

Interested in getting some perspective and tips on prospects for landing an ER or buy side gig in NYC.

I have previous experience (2 years) working as an associate in ER for a BB US bank in another country (Australia) - recent layoffs mean an internal option is not a possibility.

My key questions centre around the following:

  • Does anyone know of recent examples of people that have landed a job without an internal transfer. What was their path?

  • How far will BB experience get you? Foot in the door? Or is it all who you know?

Pretty broad, but any other pieces of advice are welcome.

Thanks

Speaking as a Swede working in the US, you’re not gonna get a job in the US without an internal transfer or coming out of some degree (masters/MBA). This is because getting a work visa in the US is done by entering a lottery with a 30% chance of getting the visa. Therefore, even if a company offered you a job, they would spend ~10k USD putting together a visa application for you, only for it to be thrown in the bin 70% of the time. So from their perspective, there’s not really much of a point to offer you a job, and then wait months only for it to not work out, and have to wait a year to apply again (H1B applications (the work visa you would be applying for) are only done once a year in the spring) I do actually vaguely recall Australians being a special case and it might be slightly easier in some instances, but I can’t remember what exactly that was

Hey thanks for the reply.

For context Australians are eligible for an E-3 visa which is a 2 year visa with infinite renewals that you can get any time a year. It also costs around $200 dollars, is approved in around 10 days, and there are 10,000 every year, with around 6000 applied for in 2016 (last stats available)

I realise this is an important point to sell, and have some graphics that explain this well for an prospective interviews/contacts.

Thanks
