Financial Modeling - Case Study

For those who have had a financial case study as part of your interview process, what did you do to prepare? Especially when it comes to updating a model.

Any advice? This is for equity research btw.

Based on the resources available on Wall Street Oasis, here are some tips to prepare for a financial case study, especially when it comes to updating a model:

  1. Understand Financial Modeling: Familiarize yourself with the basics of financial modeling. This includes understanding the different types of financial models like the 3 Statement Model, DCF Modeling, and Accretion Dilution Model.

  2. Practice: Use the Financial Modeling Templates provided by WSO to practice building and updating models. The more you practice, the more comfortable you'll be during the actual case study.

  3. Review Best Practices: Go through the Financial Modeling Best Practices guide. This will help you avoid common mistakes and improve the efficiency of your modeling.

  4. Prepare for Questions: Review the 101 Investment Banking Interview Questions, Private Equity Interview Questions, and Hedge Fund Interview Questions. While these may not be directly related to equity research, they can help you understand the kind of thinking and analysis required in finance.

  5. Use WSO Resources: Make use of the WSO Community, including the forums, videos, podcasts, and newsletters. These resources can provide valuable insights and tips from professionals in the field.

Remember, the key to acing a financial case study is understanding the underlying business and financial concepts, being comfortable with Excel, and being able to interpret and explain your model. Good luck!
