Rejected for the nth Time after Final Round & Demoralized (again)
Kind of lost professionally, I was a part of the recessionary layoffs from my firm. I don't see any hope in recruiting for new graduate positions for the third year in a row and receiving (yet again) not even a first round screen. With that said, here's been my experience in recruiting for the past several years.
Here's what I've done and the result:
- Exiting Consulting -> Corporate Finance [investor Relations, FP&A, Corp. Strat/Fin. roles] : most positions require 1-2 years (or more) of IB/VC/PE/MC experience. No interviews or I receive first rounds, do well, and they still cite relevant work experience as a reason to not move forward. I made it to a few interviews for them to state I need more relevant experience for their entry-level positions.
- Exiting Consulting -> Business Consulting: even with referrals, I have only received one technical interview from a top shop around two years ago. It's a black box where everyone I speak to says I'm a stellar candidate, they refer me and I continue to not actually receive any interviews. I have tried and received no substantial feedback for the past ~2-3 years and have gotten nothing back. I've already expressed my frustration with the management consulting recruitment process previously - it measures jack sh*t and they're better off picking names out of a hat.
- Exiting Consulting -> IB: Catch-22 issue where all these IB shops ask for deal experience upon applying to their deal teams. I made it through a final round at a boutique shop to then not receive offer.
- Exiting Consulting -> Industry: I haven't had much luck with FDLP programs, but to be fair, I haven't really put in a ton of effort for these.
- Exiting Consulting -. Tech: Canada is going through hiring freeze in this sector, hence my layoff as well (tech consulting gig) and I'm also disinterested in long-term prospects in this field.
tl;dr: was recruiting while working, burnt on both ends with layoff and no leads.
Hey man,
You've been a helpful resource/peer in this community long before I joined a few months ago. It's really disheartening to witness your troubles like this because I have no doubt about your qualifications and character. Although there isn't much I can do to resolve your concern here, I hope you know that you can reach out to me directly at any time. I've been receiving an influx of messages from my previous post, but if you reach out, I will give you my personal contact information. I'd be more than happy to listen to you over call or text and just support you however I can. I may not be able to refer you anywhere or get you in, but if you ever need a peer to hear you out, I'm here!
Seriously! Thanks for all that you do for this community.
have you considered moving to the US on TN visa? I believe you're Canadian?
