Recruiting for consulting and Investment banking simultaneously
I'm not sure if i want to do ib or consulting, but leaning more towards consulting. Applications for IB for jr year internships is already open and i was thinking doing IB recruiting this year and try to do FT recruiting for constulting next year. The only problem is I believe FT consulting positions start interviews during next summer. If i do land an IB internship, this will be during my internship and I am worried i will not have enough time to do well in the interviews. Any suggestions?
At target school if that makes a difference.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for students to recruit for both consulting and investment banking to keep their options open. Here are some suggestions to manage the process:
Prioritize Preparation: Start preparing for both consulting and investment banking interviews as early as possible. Utilize resources like the WSO Networking Guide, Investment Banking Prep, and Behavioral Techniques to get a head start.
Time Management: Since you're at a target school, you might have access to resources and alumni who can help you prepare efficiently. Use your time wisely and create a schedule that allows you to prepare for consulting interviews while you're interning.
Networking: Continue to network for both fields. Even during your IB internship, try to find time to connect with professionals in the consulting field. This can be through informational interviews or networking events.
Leverage Internship Experience: If you do land an IB internship, use the experience to your advantage in consulting interviews. Highlight transferable skills such as analytical abilities, teamwork, and time management.
Communicate with Employers: If you secure an IB internship and are invited to consulting interviews, communicate with your potential consulting employers about your situation. They may be willing to accommodate interview schedules around your internship commitments.
Seek Guidance: Talk to career advisors at your school and seek advice from peers or mentors who have been through the process.
Remember, being at a target school, you have a strategic advantage due to the on-campus recruiting presence of top firms in both industries. Use this to your benefit and plan accordingly. Good luck!

Sophomore at target here. I did an unpaid school sponsored program freshman summer (but it’s easily passed off as internship). I’m not interested in FO IB but I’d be willing to go to MO or BO roles, or I’m interested in consulting like you. Honestly you might have a better shot sticking with consulting bc banking is way too competitive these days. It sounds like u have a strong resume tho so if u see a viable path forward with banking then go for it
