I'd like an honest assessment on whether I should stay in consulting or look for a new job because I'm not cut out for it
I'm about 9 months into my time in strategy consulting. The industry isn't doing well, so obviously, a lot of people have had problems getting staffed, including myself.
I've been on 3 projects so far and was benched for 4.5 months between the 2nd and 3rd one because I did poorly on the 2nd project and because I have/had terrible networking skills.
My first project translated to an average review. 2nd project, bad to average, but the reviewer told me a few weeks ago that I had improved immensely.
The third project went poorly because "although I seem to be trying hard, I am not efficient, independent, or seeing the big picture enough." They tried to end the call saying it wasn't my fault there was a shortage of projects, and that I should have been on my 3rd engagement at the 3 month mark (and not the 8-9 month mark). They added that "they were sure I could eventually get over those weaknesses" but I feel like they were just trying to be nice.
I'm not currently on a PIP and am not designated as a low performer. And the person who did the third project with me gave me a good review at mid-year reviews (which happened before the 3rd project).
I'm happy to provide further details, but I feel like consulting is just not clicking for me and that this role isn't the right fit.
What aspect of consulting isn't for you?
The fact I may have no future in this industry based on this feedback?
But do you like consulting is the question. Are your poor reviews because you don't like what you do or because it's genuinely not clicking? Those are two very different situations.
