HELP Reneged on BCG for McKinsey, Next Steps

I recently reneged on an offer from BCG (that I had a couple of internal referrals for) for a offer I got from McKinsey a few weeks later. I based this decision off (at the time, what seemed like sensible KPIs) like a LinkedIn post I saw saying McKinsey sent 7.10% of alumni into C-Suite roles versus 6.03% for BCG and how McKinsey was a better brand name for non-finance exits as it had significantly more layman's prestige.

I called HR (as to not leave a paper trail of reneging and potentially have this bite me in the ass later down the road) and told them I am rescinding my acceptance of their offer for "personal reasons" (which was what I was recommended to say by mentors in my investment club) and hung up before they could formulate a meaningful response.

However, the HR world is much smaller than I originally thought (especially within Tier 1 shops like MBB/OY/Accenture/EY-Parthenon) and they found out by what I assumed amounted to blasting my name out through private channels with a message along the lines of "whoever TF this kid reneged on us for you better rescind his offer".

It's too late into the recruiting cycle to start looking for equally prestigious roles, should I take a large downgrade/paycut or defer my graduation and try again with a clean(er) slate?

So your McK offer got pulled? You probably should’ve just told BCG you weren’t joining closer to starting date so they don’t have time to react
