Chance my CV for tier 2 strat (from Big 4 consulting)
Hi guys,
I'm currently in one of the Big 4, strategy & sustainability consulting in Asia with 2 years of experience (not Deloitte S&O) and I'm trying to break into tier 2 strat (AT Kearney, roland berger and etc.) or even try for MBB.
Btw, I've got an interview coming up with Deloitte S&O if that helps.
Please review my CV and tell me upfront, whats my chance! Thanks!
First of all, I don't work at MBB (Last year I got a few offers from Monitor, LEK, RB and Deloitte M&A Advisory Asia offices though). Your resume looks great, at least in my perspective. But If you do want to get into MBB or ATKearney or RB or Monitor or Booz, it's pretty tough without excellent networking skills (at least in my country). I would recommend you (Exavtly what I did last year) put 90% of your stamina to network (Of course you should have your resume reviewed many times by insiders and conducted mock-interviews) with anybody you could reach, such as alums, friends, family networks etc. When I applied for those consulting firms last year, I don't think I could get any interviews without networking. All this work I think can grant you a first-round interview opportunity in tier2 consulting firms. And if you could know some one in the firm, you would benefit much more. For example, through my friend's friend, the guy I networked with was my interviewer in the first round! Of course I past the first round, and through follow-ups I was told who would be my second-round interviewers and what should I be aware of when talking with those folks.
All in all, networking prioritize anything else especially when you are not from a target school with little working experience. Hope this helps:) GOOD LUCK
Thanks for the reply!
So what exactly do you do when you meet a network? Do you pass him your CV? Any strategy/tips? I do know people in those firms but they are fairly junior. Not sure if they are influential enough to land me a 1st round.
well, in my case, since I used to practicing cases with a lot of guys from Harvard (They have a consulting club with hundreds of active members), so what I cared most was to get the interview opportunity. As you might know, for consulting firms especially tier1 and tier2 ones, if you are not from target schools, hardly can you get an interview opportunity, assuming you have done nothing about networking. I agree with you that networking with juniors in those firms might be less helpful since they couldn't make any influence. But I did get interview calls from those firms only because my network past my resume to HR (My GPA is 3.6/4.0 for undergraduate and 3.9 for graduate, both degree in engineering). If you know for example the chairman of MBB in Europe, definitely you'll have a huge advantage over others, which I didn't have back then and didn't see any of my friends have.
Regarding how to network, this is a case by case issue. The process I did was to login to my schools' alum system and typed words like "McKinsey", "Bain" etc. I then emailed alums and pointed out my interests in learning more about their firms and their experience there (don't ask them to see you resume or make recommendations, they don't know you at all). After that I would end up with the opportunity to meet them in person or call them. No specific strategies in terms of how to speak with them, just ask interesting questions (do some research beforehand is neccessary). Then email them weekly or biweekly (be smart when sending emails) until either they tell you they are not hiring this year or get a call or email from HR telling you to pick a time for the upcoming interview. Well, this is exactly what happened last year on my side. I think this process should be working in many countries including UK.
If you have no better people to network, try those juniors and ask them to pass your resume to HR. It won't hurt right?
