Capital One vs. Mastercard Advisors vs. Alvarez & Marsal

Hello Everyone,

I am a junior at a semi-target trying to choose from three possible internship offers:

  • Capital One BA Intern ~$51/ hour + $3000 signing bonus
  • MasterCard Consultant $29/hour + $5000 signing bonus
  • Alvarez & Marsal → Dallas, TX  (salary unknown)

I am trying to see what company would best set me up for a move into MBB or honestly in my career as a whole. I am unsure if these internships are considered "amazing", but I am happy with them.

First off, congratulations for landing three terrific internship offers! Second off... please redefine amazing.

Capital One is a solid T2 shop. Moving from Capital One to Big 4 Strategy, OW, LEK (and others) is definitely possible. I don't know much of MasterCard, but I've seen many akin the work and exposure to that of Capital One. Both of these firms provide great exposure into internal strategy position within the financial service sectors. I would argue that Oliver Wyman in particular really values Capital One because of the quantitative and data analytical roles the firm provides as well as the financial service sector exposure

Finally, Alvarez & Marsal is a huge shop (industry leader) in Performance Improvement and Turnaround & Restructuring. I have routinely seen Bain in particular hire from Alvarez & Marsal (and vice versa) because the work within the private equity service offering mirror each other.

Keep in mind that with any of the offers you take: the position experience, impact, and team matter the most!

On a final note, external outcomes are always influenced by external factors - take the position that makes the most sense right now!
