Advice Needed
Young chimp in need of some advice.
I graduated with a 2.1 from a semi-target in 2021 (not in a numerical discipline but still relatively well thought of) and immediately went to law school. Did pretty well but didn't receive any offers and by the end of the year had decided law wasn't for me, so got my diploma (high 2.1 again) and left. Hadn't made it far in my applications to BBs/ larger consultancies during my time at uni, but managed to get a position as an analyst at a niche, fast-growing firm. Problems - the department I work in is both marketing and consulting (I don't have any interest in marketing) and the comp is terrible and won't really improve all that much as I progress. WLB isn't bad (could be fully remote if I wanted to be) and the work can be super interesting (sprint financial modelling projects/ strategy review) but often it is not. It's a very data-heavy role with a lot of Excel/SQL work, but still client-facing which I'm hoping is setting me up somewhat well for the future.
So on to my questions: Once my first year is up in a couple of months I'm hoping to move on to a new role at a bigger firm with better comp + progression. What should I be doing now to set myself up for this? Is lateralling at this stage of my career going to be tricky? Will bigger firms recognise my skills or will I be dinged because it's a niche firm and I've had to do marketing work as well?
