Path from QA to PM

I'm a senior quant analyst with a top LO AM. My focus has been on research, portfolio construction and risk management. I seek advice on how to plan and communicate with my manager to become a portfolio manager or at least co-manage. It's a new team and I hope to transition to the desired role internally. What's the right way to communicate or act on this interest?
