INTP am I Screwed in Banking? Forum's RSS Feed Share

So according to this test:
http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp

I have done this test 3 times with a minimum of a 6 month interval between each attempt. Each of the 3 times it said I am an INTP. After reading the description of INTP, it pretty much sums up my personality. However it does not match a banker's profile, more of a quant or computer geek.

INTPs seem to live a pretty miserable life too... Well I seem to have three choices:

1. Find New Career Path
2. Change my personality
3. Believe that www.humanmetrics.com is full of bullcrap and keep on doing what I'm doing

Advice guys? thanks!

If a website with purported psychometrics are going to dictate your life, you need a long think.

Also, trollolololol?

Seriously, psychology is for those with two x chromosomes. Does INTP mean introverted or something? If it does you can work to change it.

Being "introverted" according to that test isn't something you should worry about at all. I know "I" people who party, socialize, and get along fine with everyone (and many of these people work in a finance environment).

While I hesitate to reply to a troll post - it's actually an interesting question. Is anyone out there really a "banker" personality? Or at least a "monkey" personality?

Does this sound like you?

- Work 25 hours a day.
- Be treated like a bitch.
- Fix spelling mistakes and bind presentations.
- Share intimate secrets and tales of "those times when you had a life" with your spreadsheet.

In reality, banking (at least at the analyst level) is more of survival and a stepping stone to bigger and better things (even if that's banking at the senior level). You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that would fit the typical "banker" personality, where you'd say: "yeah, he's definitely a monkey at heart".

P.s. I know the things I'm saying are "no, duh". It's just interesting that although banking is one of the most sought out careers (especially among this audience), it's unlikely to show up on any career centre "fit" test as a good option, or even a valid alternative.

I'm an INTP, and to me it sounds pretty good, but fuck that test and fuck you for letting it determine your career.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

These assessments indicate your current attitude towards life. I was labelled INTP (very much so) as a kid, and I believed it. After taking the test again, 20 years later, I got completely different results. Your personality is like any set of muscles: the ones you work out get stronger.

Get a job or volunteer in an organization that requires interfacing with strangers. It's weird at first and then you start seeing patterns, and it gets easier. Also, try getting more excercise, eating more protein, getting more sleep, etc... to give yourself more energy.

FWIW, being INTP puts you in the top bracket of brain power in a group and all you need to do is be more proactive while simplifying your objectives. IQ (which can also fluctuate to a lesser extent) is the raw processing horsepower, and as long as you score well there ...at least average... IBD, lawyer, doctor, accountant, etc are within reach. Don't be fooled by pushy/loud people, as a 100% true/pure extrovert is very rare and wouldn't make it in IBD or most other careers, as their ego (their definition of themselves) makes collaberation impossible.

Reach out to other shy people who are breaking out of their head. And put down the damn book: you KNOW what you need to do better than most, now just do it and get on with your life. Trust me, I know what this is like because I passed through this. Never let go of the introspective (sensitive/empathic/intuitive) part of the way you look at things: it gives you enormous power that others simple don't understand or even realize.

IQ can also be compensated for by (1) hard work (2) emotional engagement / interest in what you're trying to do and (3) sticking to the basics. Also, surround yourself with people that you like being around and who empower you. Sometimes, the 'introverted' form of expression is simply a withdrawal from the people that you're not comfortable around.

INTPs completely dominate many spheres of influence, often invisibly, so don't buy into the noise that others are making: it's only a label and like any other test, all it says is how you performed on THAT test at THAT time. Psychological measuring sticks are for basic determinations of capabilities and interest.......it's a rudimentary data point, not a religion.

You are the creation of yourself.

OP would need more desire to be a banker than someone who is a natural fit. Doesn't mean he can't do it. But it does make it harder.

OP is in HS

Say What:

I am currently a high school senior in Canada with a 94% average. I have no problems getting into the top Canadian business schools such as Ivey, Queens, and Schulich. However, USA business schools recently caught my interest. I am wondering if it is worth it to stay back a year, do the SATs and apply for schools like Wharton...

I am confident in my extra-curricular activities and have scored high on practice SATs.

Cost-wise schools in the USA will be a lot more expensive...
