Instead I started with 85 lbs just to get the form right and got up to 225 within 6 months. Peeked at 265. Anyone have any tips for breaking past your barrier? I've been doing wendler's 531 for a couple years now and I just can't break past 265. It's really starting to bug me. My goal is to get to 300 lbs (I weigh 170).

Depends if you are failing with your chest or triceps.
Bands can be great for breaking through a plateau:

Chains are fun as well. Board press can make you feel like a beast.
Also, try switching up your reps/volume/grips and also your secondary exercises. If you are stuck you need some sort of shock to the system to get you going again. Trying a different program completely might be beneficial (I'm partial to Westside for Skinny Bastards by Defranco).

Make sure you are using proper technique, this will help you get every bit out of your current level of strength. When you train, lift fast. If you have a couple buddies that you work out with, you can do bench press negatives to help build additional strength. Also, if you haven't already done it, spend some extra time on your triceps and preferably not the same day that you do your chest. You want to lift as heavy as possible when you work on your triceps and sometimes that weight is diminished if you are doing your tricep exercises after your chest exercises. Also, maybe switch up your routine a little bit and see if that helps at all. Sometimes the body will become accustomed to certain programs and the intended impact will be diminished...switching it up might help you break through that plateau.

Thanks for the suggestions cph and duff. I'll try them out. I've been looking into DeFranco's program. Why do you recommend westside over built like a badass? I've heard really good things about both.
Btw, how much can you guys bench and what's your weight? My one rep maxs are:
bench: 265
squat: 355
deadlift: 335
I'm pretty embarassed about my squat tbh.

I like Westside just because it's a pretty flexible routine and easy to keep interesting. I'm not religious about following it either. I think it's more important to mix up what you do vs. doing one program over another.
Haven't done a true max in any of these exercises in a long time. My best guess would be 295 bench, 305 squat (if I'm using perfect form) and 340 deadlift. My squat has never been the same since a dislocated hip my freshman year of college so that is a bit of an outlier. I work out in a fitness center in my building, so limited as to what equipment I have available which sucks. Weight is usually in the 180-185 range.

I don't know what your frame is like for certain, but at 6'5" I assume you have long arms. Most would agree that you're at somewhat of a disadvantage benching. I am 6'3" and have long arms for my height (37/38 sleeves) and have always had a bench that lagged behind my dead lift and squat. If you follow one of the programs above (Wendler/ ws4sb) your'e all but guaranteed to increase that though, it just may take time because you start with really modest %'s.

I will give you some old stats, since it's been many years since I've worked out for any extended length of time. When I was in the Army I weighed between 200 and 210. The most I ever maxed out at on bench press was 315 but, in my defense, it was after I did a rep at 300, then a rep at 305 and then another rep at 310...so probably not a true max in the sense that it was the most that I could lift, but a max in the sense that it was the most that I actually did lift. Basically I thought 300 would be my max but did that easily and felt I could do a bit more so I added the subsequent amount of weight and ended working my way up to the 315 mark. I'm not sure what that my translate to in an actual max amount of weight but I'm guess a bit more.
Anyways, I've always had huge legs, so I've never focused on them when working out or training. I grew up playing soccer and my legs developed early, so much so that I was stuck wearing briefs to my soccer games because my legs wouldn't fit through the holes in the boxers that fit my waist...or if I could get my legs in, the fit was so tight that the boxers would be stretched and rip whenever I moved abruptly or ran. Lucky for me my boxer briefs were invented and became mainstream, lol. This can still be an issue when I'm shopping for pants so (1) I am like a girl, I have to try on 50 different pairs to find 1 pair of jeans that fits decent and (2) I often end up wearing pants that are a few sizes too big for my waist otherwise I look like I stole Justin Bieber's suitcase.

Look at any powerlifting meets results. Squats don't usually pass deads until the heavyweight categories. I'm guessing at 5'8" the guy I was quoting isn't 105kg+.

Lol, if I were 105+kg at my height, I would look like a ball. I'm 170 lbs (77ish kg?).
That's interesting though. The guy I work out with can squat wayyy more than he deadlifts. I never took into account his body type I guess. He's 6'2" 220 lbs and his legs are fucking huuge.
Maybe I should be satisfied with my squat for now and work hard at improving my deadlift then...
