Hey man, I know what you mean. I come from a west coast target, applied to every bank in sight (20-25), and only got 3 interviews too. I have similar stats to you and most bankers I networked with told me that my resume looks great. I have no idea what happened with me. I keep wondering if 3 interviews is normal, if my resume actually just sucks, or if this is just a hard year.

But good luck on your interviews! We just gotta work with what we have.

Keep grinding away.

Even while Wall Street / Finance is arguably going through a rough time, competition has never been more fierce. AND - analysts / associates / VPs/ MDs are busier than ever, which means they're going to cherry pick resumes from Ivys to save time. It's even difficult inter-Ivy league. We had so many applicants this year that we basically just eliminated non-targets and those with 3.6 or below. It's crude but efficient.

Apparently a very bad year.. when I went through OCR for SA, I ended up interviewing with all BBs that came to campus and elite boutiques. I didn't even reach out to anybody and my work experience was completely irrelevant, plus my GPA was bad.

Hey Period,

Did you network at all during the semester/summer?

Did you attend all the on campus events held by those firms?

I've found a major correlation between which event I attended and which OCR situation has worked out.

I'm sending you a PM with some useful info...

I'm at a top target on the west coast, and from what I gather, most people only got 2-3 interviews (I personally got 2). It's definitely a really bad time to be recruiting.

My biggest concern is the whole idea of banks wanting candidates that other banks want. Is anyone else worried about this? If you only have 2-3 interviews, can you get dinged for this?

Recruiting this year is terrible, especially for sophomores. I thought I was a shoo-in for first rounds, but apparently not. My sophomore friends and I have received ZERO BB/elite boutique first rounds through OCR this year, and we all have extraordinarily strong resumes, stronger than most juniors.

I just transferred into C from a top pub school(semi-targets). I maintained a non-target attitude towards getting SA interviews and glad to say I got first rounds for most of the top BB's entirely from networking.

But quick question -- did Barclays really decide who gets 1st rounds already? The info session/resume drop deadline was on Thursday, and I haven't received an acceptance or rejection yet. PM me if you want some tips, I put together a pretty healthy compilation of VERY helpful alumni

Also, I don't think many of the banks you posted have posted who gets first rounds or not - and from the looks of it, it could be a resume format problem man. Honestly, most of the people I've met here at C with similar stats get interviews right off the bat. You might want to dig up that post here on WSO about the Associate who gave out info on what he does to 'ding' resumes for first rounds.

Are you sure? I don't go to Columbia, but at my Ivy I know plenty of people with 3.6+ who didn't get more than 2-3 first round interviews at OCR.

Even at Ivies with strong GPA's, I am convinced that it will be tough to land first rounds unless you network heavily.

I just spoke to my buddy at Northwestern. He had 3.6~ GPA in Econ. He got exactly 1 first-round interview for OCR.

Also - even if you get first round interview, you are still facing heavy odds stacked against you to land an offer. Even at superday, candidate to offer ratio is around 10:1.

Do you mean you auto-ding any resume with a GPA below 3.7, even from Ivies? This is bat-shit crazy.

I wonder what most of Ivy kids will be doing after graduation if they strike out on finance/ consulting. Job market is fucking terrible.

Nope. Most of the hiring/interviewing is done by current analysts, the majority of whom are CC. SEAS, for several reasons, is not looked at as prestigious as CC. In fact CC makes Princeton look like a safety school (6.4% at CC vs 8.2% at Princeton), whereas just a few cycles ago SEAS had an acceptance rate of over 20%.

Also, and this counts a bit less, but all the major alumni are CC. Alexander Navab (co-head of KKR PE), Barack Obama, Eric Holder, etc etc.

And your thinking that engineering is valued in finance recruiting - LOL. Don't even have words for that.

SEAS is a mediocre technical school for socially awkward kids who realized early on they weren't accomplished enough to compete in the CC applicant pool.

Hmm... I'm from GS, networked with MD's at top BB's who came out of CC and had 0 problems whatsoever. Think of it this way, cc, seas, and gs are just admission portals. Once you're in, everyone is competent; a 3.0 at cc, is obviously not going to have a competitive advantage over 3.6+ at gs. Also, let me reiterate that even though you're at an Ivy, doesn't mean you can skip networking. Given the economic climate, I'd say that networking is a necessity; also, most alums from all 3 that I've interacted with really do not care what part of CU a candidate is in. It's entirely how well you connect with them.

LOL. Really? And just how many end up on silicon valley? How about you go read some career reports before you post nonsense like that. Silicon valley jobs are more competitive than IB jobs. Most engineers from top schools even end up in second-rate leadership rotational programs or back office finance jobs. Exceptions: CMU SCS, Stanford, Caltech. That's it.

Bruce.Wayne:

That's great for you. I'm speaking of a neutral field where neither candidate has networked. In that situation the analysts reviewing resumes will go for what's familiar -- CC. And there's more to GPA my friend. If GPA was the sole criteria for admission to CC, the acceptance rate wouldn't be the second lowest after Harvard. CC students, in general, are more typically accomplished, and that matters in recruiting. Not to mention, brand value. A lot of alums self-identify as CC not as CU, for instance.

Do you even read posts? All you've done is cite how there isn't as much of an engineering presence in IB because for some strange reason you are completely oblivious to the fact that the majority of engineers actually want to go into engineering.

Clearly you've never stepped foot on an Ivy League campus.

With the position the investment banking industry is in, I don't think you can judge the 3 schools on a premise where nobody networks. I'd say with a student from all 3 schools who are personable and network there are no differences.

I go to an Ivy. You, on the other hand, need to go back to College Confidential with your juvenile posts, they must miss people like you over there still swinging your epeen about brand name and acceptance rates to colleges in online forums.

Douchey Whartonite is douchey. ;)

Wharton: until mid-2000s, the safety school of the ivy league, where applicants looking to avoid intellectually rigorous courses went. ;)

Lol jk, but seriously, chill.

Douchey Whartonite is douchey.

Aimlessly denouncing an entire field, even parts of your own school, makes you sound like a tool. I hope not all Columbia kids are like you.
