Depends what type of resume you want.

lol sorry if it came off as sales pitchy... honestly though, there are a lot of bad resumes out there (i've seen seen quite a few) and if I had known about a service like this for my specific field coming out of college I would've used it as I truly believe that my resume/cl kept from getting interviews at several places. In any case, I've worked a lot with some of the guys on the resume review team (some I manage because they write for site) and they are top notch individuals who really care about someone's resume and are definitely going to make sure the person gets his/her moneys worth. Additionally, I saw the some of the process of the recent round of hirings for the resume review team and Patrick very careful about who he added in - quality has and always will be the #1 priority with this.
.
Ok, I agree that the title was over the top so I just changed it (we didn't realize someone would take such offense - it was tongue in cheek)...but animalz, I think you're being a bit unfair here.
Also, this is just wrong:
...random? It's not random, it is almost always the junior employees (in a bank, the analysts and associates) that do an initial screen for first round interviews. Build a brand and kill the competitors? Honestly this is laughable...resume reviews is a very small portion of the business and I don't think we are "killing" anyone by providing a high quality service that our clients love (see testimonials - yes, they are ALL REAL. You don't get that by "inventing rules" and "myths" - you get those by results)...also, we have turned several people away that we didn't think were a good fit and/or we didn't have a great reviewer for what they were targeting. Hardly aggressive sales tactics...I can assure you that high quality content and community building will remain at the CORE FOCUS of the site. BUT, we still need to pay the bills and developers and team. Everything can't be free. Have you missed the steady string of Q&As Interviews with industry pros we've been doing? More on the way...How about all of the changes we've made since the Suggestions Thread I made about a month ago here? //www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/wall-street-oasis-suggestion-time (sneak preview, new FAQ section almost done...new design+navigation+we'll be adding a lot more content in there next week: //www.wallstreetoasis.com/frequently-asked-questions )
As for the WSO Conference, I'm sorry the reminders irritated you so much -- the reality is it was our first year throwing an event so we wanted to make sure we got a great showing. Point taken. We will take that into account next year, but it doesn't mean we aren't going to make it fun and try to grab your attention. I won't take offense if you ignore those posts. For a sold-out / packed house at the WSO Conference with close to 300 people, guess how much $ the business made. $0! Actually, slightly negative. But that's ok, because we likely "killed some competitors" and "built our brand" in the process (.....joking about the killing competitors, not the brand part :-) Anyways, the Conference was a so much fun (and I think very valuable to those that attended) that I am going to push it hard again next year (sorry) - look, we already have our "Chuck Norris" countdown in the right column. Only 295 days!!!!
As far as your opinion that I have no class and that we are over aggressive, I will try not to take it personally since we've never spoken in person (I think?).
Thanks for your thoughts -- honestly, there are likely others that also felt the same way you did so we will keep this in mind when we promote our products & services to the home page from now on.
Thanks, Patrick
animalz, no monkey shit at all - you're entitled to your opinion...but I thought I specifically addressed who our resume reviewers are above. We have a handful of reviewers that have a range of experience from banking to PE to corp fin to management consulting, so that we can assign the appropriate reviewer to the appropriate client. Why is this a "joke" to you? they all have a TON of experience reviewing resumes.
honestly, in a year time this website will be incredibly more valuable as our Company Database (free!) is growing fast, as is our userbase and content -- both blogs and forums (free!).
99%+ of the content on this site has nothing to do with our products / services, so I'm not sure what you're referring to or if something has been pissing you off lately that we are doing?
Are you and Andylouis the same person?
Happy new year
i dont think WSO needs to sell anything, they are here to help and educate, u sound cynical, how much have you paid for the privilege of being on here for the wealth of useful inside info, please be grateful and show some respect.
I do not mean this to come across the wrong way, but anybody who is a non-native English speaker needs to have someone professionally write their resume. The phrasing comes out wrong often times and is really distracting and damaging to the prospective employee.
I have my resume professionally written every five years or so, even if I'm not looking for a job, just to make sure I remember everything major I've done. I've usually spent about $100-150 or so. The problems I've had is that, while they can get the formatting right and improve my phrasing since I'm not a good writer, I have to rewrite large sections of it because the writer doesn't know anything about finance. For a little bit more, it's probably worth it to use someone that knows finance lingo and what certain accomplishments actually mean to frame them correctly. The last guy I used got all of that stuff wrong and took huge rewrites on my part. I haven't used the WSO service yet, but I'll probably give it a shot next time I need to do this.
.
Absolutely. A decent % of our clients are still undergraduates trying to position themselves for finance careers.
The Resume Review service includes a first draft and a follow up revision. With our extensive questionnaire and additional follow-up questions on a case by case basis, typically our reviewers will have made significant changes in the first draft, and then there is some back and forth before producing a final 2nd draft. If a third draft is needed or you have additional concerns, all of our reviewers will be accommodating, as long as you aren't trying to add in entirely new experiences months later (has happened).
Does that answer your question? either way, good luck this season.
Thanks, Patrick
One more question before I leave this thread: how long does it take for the guys to get back to me (non-expedited)?
Beretta, for a Regular Review, typically takes 5-7 days for a first draft and I'd say 7-10 days to have a final. That being said, it also depends on how responsive you are. For tough cases I've seen the full 2 weeks, for great cases I've seen a 3 day turnaround. I'd say average is 6-7.
I think we should be grateful that WSO is not riddled with pop-up ads or ads between every post in threads. I don't personally think the advertisements for WSO or affiliated products are even close to being excessive, nor are they annoying. I mean it's like one ad post per 100 posts at most.
As long as there aren't any google adsense ads or pop-ups, I'm happy.
How about resume review for ER roles?
Yes, we do have current ER professionals that can provide a resume review targeted toward Equity Research.
Thanks, Patrick
Not to toot anyone's horn ... but over the past four years of being on WSO my resume was done three times. That $600 investment played a big part in my current $100k salary.
woah, 3 times - nice. Thanks for the vote of confidence :-)
Who else on here has used this service? Did you see a big change in before and after results?
I used this service coming from a Big 4 Audit background. The reviewer helped me tremendously with phrasing, formatting, and the message I was sending to IBs. Definitely is one of the main reasons why I was able to lateral into an IB Analyst position at a MM Bank.
I've heard good things about the service but I'm just wondering how much value a resume critique can add. Experience is king and it isn't changing retroactively. I might give it a shot though...
True, experience is king, but communicating the experience properly is pretty critical as well. You'd be surprised at how much people mess this up, along with formatting and giving too much or too little detail.
I know this comes a couple months late but fwiw, here goes: I'm a resume reviewer for WSO, work in PE and prior to that worked in investment banking, and have actually reviewed over 300 resumes (but whose counting). For each resume sent my way, I probably spend a good 5-6 hours on it and go through multiple turns of it to make sure my "clients" receive a good quality, kick-ass resume.
And just fyi, for all the haters out there, we do this more as a way to give back to the community which helped us out when we were recruiting than to make a gazillion dollars. Trust me 5-6 hours of my time (and everyone else including Patrick / Andy / all other resume reviewers) is way way more valuable monetarily than what we receive out of doing this. Also we're actual professionals, not some bullshit consultancy or internal career center where you have people reviewing resumes who've never worked outside a university. We're also the people that usually handle all the recruiting for PE/HF/IB roles, so when we like kids who've approached us who are solid, we tend to help them out with our relationships/references outside of just reviewing a piece of paper because we genuinely care (well atleast I tend to do it, can't speak to the others). My point here is that ultimately the value you receive out of this is so much more than then meager $s you spend so the team here can keep the lights on, its ridiculous.
Patrick/Andy - I don't understand why you even put up with these jokers like that animalz guy up there. The growth of the website and the number of people who frequent this on a daily basis speaks for itself. Why even bother explaining all that you've done to idiots like this? Seriously.
For anyone worried about investing the money and doesn't trust any of the above, PM me and I can answer any questions re the process. You can trust that I'll give it like it is. And even if you're not convinced then, we'd be happy to not have your business.
the price is too steep for the offer....
Just want to ask, is the resume editing suitable for someone (like me) studying in UK and applying for internships in London? I guess most of the resume reviewers work in the US...
hey, we actually have vetted reviewers all around the world in major financial hubs, obviously including London :-)
Do you or AndyLouis mind creating a coverletter example? I know there probably shouldn't be a template but I need to know what are the key things a cover letter has. My resume is fine (I think) but I've never made a cover letter.
Awesome service!
Thanks :-)
Man do I wish I had the $200 for this right now. So does the editor basically look at what you have and then craft/fix it to look appealing to the industry? Or is it more of they tell you what's wrong but you have to make the edits yourself? I wouldn't mind doing the latter but I don't want to go back to old habits and mess up the resume again. AndyLouis WallStreetOasis.com
you get an extensive questionnaire, they take that and the current draft of your resume and mold it to be as attractive to your target industry as possible...not cheap, but a much better deal than other options out there. :-)
Interesting. I think I'll buy it later this week.
WallStreetOasis.com can the cover letter service make one from scratch? I've never made one myself and I have an app due soon.
the reviewers are able to share a template with you once you sign up, but it's a review service, not a writing service, so they won't write one from scratch for you...
best of luck!
Hmm alright.
I'm currently active duty Marine, and I'm looking for a transition from the Marine Corps and into the finance sector starting in about nine months... I know I'm working uphill here, with no experience in the finance industry and an unrelated degree (Internation Relations), but my interest is piqued at what this may provide for me in regards to getting my foot in the door. Looking for any assistance I can get here.
Hi razo. With minimal experience, it will be tough, but I believe a resume review can still be helpful to organize your leadership and education sections to make them as impressive as possible. If you couple that with some self study and somehow show a genuine interest in finance, I think you may be able to land some interviews with aggressive networking...
One issue is that you should get much more specific than "finance sector" since that can basically mean anything. The more you can understand the landscape and narrow in on what job you want coming out the better you can research if that is realistic (LinkedIn and WSO great for that) and what steps are needed to get there...
Good luck! Patrick
Patrick, thanks for the candid reply. Specifically, I'm looking towards a career as a Registered Investment Advisor. I know I'm looking at an uphill battle here, but I'm very much leaning forward on self-educating and proactively seeking opportunities with employers that may offer entry-level positions with good training curriculums/plans (Fidelity, from my understanding, has just that...).
Thank you again for reaching out, Drew
I'm on the resume review team, so I obviously have a financial incentive to get people to use this service, but after using the WSO Resume Review service twice while in undergrad, I cannot recommend it enough. $199 for a professional resume review is a bargain.
